What is Faith?

Everyone puts their trust in something, whether it’s the stability of a job, the loyalty of a friend, or even the safety of a well-built home. But when the Bible talks about faith, it points to something far deeper. It’s what keeps you praying when the answer hasn’t come, what steadies you when the future feels unknown, and what lifts your eyes when hope seems far away. Hebrews 11:1 describes it this way, “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

In other words, faith is holding on to what God has promised, even before you can see it with your eyes. It’s not about ignoring reality or pretending everything is fine; it’s about trusting that God is at work in every detail, even when the evidence isn’t yet visible.

Faith gives us the courage to step forward when the path ahead isn’t clear, knowing that God’s character is steady even when our circumstances are not.

Why is Faith Important?

Faith is the foundation of our relationship with God. Without it, we cannot truly know Him or walk with Him. The Bible tells us plainly that “without faith it is impossible to please God” (Hebrews 11:6), because faith is how we respond to who He is and what He has done.

Faith matters because it is through faith that we receive God’s gift of salvation. We don’t earn His love or forgiveness by working harder or trying to be perfect, it comes through trusting in Jesus Christ, who lived, died, and rose again so we could be made right with God. Faith is the open hand that receives what God has already provided.

When we trust God, we invite Him into every part of our lives. We lean on His strength instead of our own, we rest in His promises instead of our fears, and we begin to see life from His perspective.

Faith is important because it shapes how we pray, how we endure trials, and how we love others. It turns belief into action, hope into endurance, and trust into peace.

“Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

What Does It Mean to Have Faith in God?

Having faith in God means trusting Him with every part of your life. Past, present, and future. It means believing that He is good, even when your circumstances aren’t. It’s saying “yes” to His guidance even when it’s hard to understand.

Faith in God means
we believe He is who He says He is, and that He will do what He has promised. It’s not only a one-time decision, but a daily posture. Some days, that faith looks like bold obedience, stepping into something new because you believe God is leading. Other days, it looks like steadfast endurance, holding on to His promises while you wait for Him to act.

To have faith in God is to trust Him enough to let go of your own plan. It’s admitting that His ways are higher than yours and believing that His timing is always perfect, even if it doesn’t match your expectations.

Faith isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it, because it draws you closer to the One who never fails.

What Can Faith Do in Your Life?

When you place your faith in God, it begins to shape every area of your life. It is a living trust that changes how you see the world, how you respond to challenges, and how you walk through each day.

Faith gives you hope when circumstances feel hopeless. It gives you strength when you feel worn out. It gives you courage when the future is uncertain. The Bible is full of stories where faith changes everything. The same God who worked through the lives of people like Job, David, Daniel, Paul, and Noah is at work today, and He can work in your life, too.

When life feels exhausting, faith in God gives you the strength to keep going. It anchors you in His promises, keeps you steady in His truth, and helps you see that He is working even in the smallest details. Through faith, God builds your character, deepens your trust in Him, and draws you into the kind of life He created you to live.

Faith Brings Hope and Strength in Difficult Times

When the future feels unclear, faith helps you stand firm. There will be days when the weight feels too heavy and the road ahead feels too long. In those moments, faith holds you up. Isaiah 40:31 reminds us, “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

Faith allows you to wait on God with confidence, knowing that He is your source of strength. It does not remove the trial, but it gives you endurance to face it. A great example of this is when Job held fast to God even when he lost everything, or when David clung to God’s promises while hiding from those who wanted to take his life. Their hope did not come from their circumstances. It came from knowing the Lord was with them and would sustain them.

When your faith is in God, you can walk through valleys with an assurance that He will carry you through. You may still feel the weight of the trial, but you will not face it alone.

“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

Faith Gives You Courage and Stability in Uncertainty

Uncertainty has a way of shaking our confidence. When the future feels unclear, it is tempting to cling tightly to our own plans or to give in to fear. Faith, however, gives you a different anchor. It teaches you to rest in the truth that God knows the way ahead, even when you do not.

Daniel understood this. When he was thrown into the lion’s den for remaining faithful to God, he could not see how the night would end. Yet he trusted that his life was in God’s hands. That trust gave him courage to stand firm and stability to face the unknown without giving in to panic.

Faith can steady you in the same way today. It helps you breathe when the job interview leaves you waiting for an answer. It gives you peace when the medical test results have not yet come back. It gives you courage when you are stepping into a new school, a new role, or a new city without knowing a single person. Faith reminds you that God’s presence is not dependent on your circumstances.

Trusting Him does not guarantee that life will unfold exactly as you hope, but it does assure you that He is present, powerful, and working for your good. When you believe that, you can walk into the unknown with confidence, knowing He is already there.

Faith Leads to Transformation and Spiritual Growth

Faith is not static. When you trust God day by day, He uses that trust to shape your heart, renew your mind, and transform your life. “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Each step of obedience strengthens your faith, and each trial endured deepens your dependence on Him.

The Bible gives us powerful examples of how faith changes people. Paul’s life was completely transformed when he placed his faith in Jesus. From a man who opposed the church to one of its greatest messengers, his faith led to bold ministry and unshakable hope. Noah’s faith moved him to obey God’s instructions, even when those around him could not understand.

When you live by faith, you begin to see the world differently. You grow in patience because you trust God’s timing. You grow in courage because you know He is with you. And you grow in love because you begin to reflect His heart to those around you.

David Althroff from The Orchard Barrington shared the following testimony about how he has seen God work in his life at his baptism. For most of my life, I carried the weight of the world on my shoulders. I believed in Jesus, but only in an intellectual way, shaped more by church tradition than by a personal relationship with Him. I thought my success, security, and happiness depended entirely on my own efforts. I worked tirelessly to provide for my family, to control outcomes, and to fix every challenge that came my way. Sin wasn’t something I thought about because I measured life by my own standards, not God’s.

Ninhursag Avakian from The Orchard North Shore shared the following testimony about how she has seen God work in her life by calling her to serve. I serve with the middle school girls and the young adults both at the North Shore campus and at the all church gatherings. I have been so blessed to be serving in all three ministries and have been able to grow in each role. With the middle school girls, I have been blessed to see a student give her life to the Lord and get the honor of walking alongside her in her journey with Christ as her leader.

The Staff at The Orchard Itasca shared the following testimony about how they have seen God work through the ministry of the Forest View Nursing and Rehab Center. We began this ministry last year and have set up quarterly visits to the facility. Each time, 15 people meet there at 2 pm. Some people just engage with those in the common areas, talking with them, praying with them. Others, including Pastor Ryan go door-to-door and visit with those who are in their rooms. We take gift bags each time to hand out to both residents and staff.
